Adult Offenses

In many cases, juveniles are not treated as adults by the legal system.  Typically, juvenile cases are heard in juvenile court rather than adult court, and the punishments imposed by judges are lesser than those which would be applied to adult offenders.  However, there are some juvenile crimes which are considered to be serious enough in nature that they are prosecuted in adult court, with adult penalties.

In New Jersey, serious juvenile offenses are considered part of the state’s “formal calendar” (as opposed to the “informal calendar”).  The formal calendar includes crimes like murder, aggravated assault, and rape.  Similarly, Pennsylvania also maintains a list of crimes which are considered grave enough to land juveniles in adult court.  Provided that the juvenile is at least 15 years of age at the time of the offense, crimes which Pennsylvania treats as adult offenses include murder, rape, aggravated assault, manslaughter, kidnapping, and robbery, and offenses where a deadly weapon was present.
